As the first phase of landscape design, site planning considers land use zoning, access, circulation, privacy, security, shelter, land drainage, and other factors unique to each municipal project.   Hitz Design offers experienced site planning and analysis services.  By means of a thorough site analysis, information about slope, soils, hydrology, vegetation, parcel ownership, orientation, etc. are assessed and mapped to determine the optimal location for the project elements.

As a full service landscape design firm, Hitz Design has experience working with municipalities and institutions to create community spaces that creatively meet project requirements and user needs. Our team possesses the experience, knowledge and skill required to lead your community project from the public input phase through construction.

Hitz Design has experience with public infrastructure, storm water management, design for institutions, the treatment of wetlands, parks and nature preserves, recreational facilities, housing areas, urban design, parking lots, historic landscapes and conservation planning.

Through the design process, it is our aim to help Clients to minimize environmental destruction, consider the impact of the proposed project, and include natural processes along with the development of new facilities.

A municipality’s ever common struggle exists in providing functional, aesthetically pleasing landscapes that can be used by hundreds, even thousands, of citizens, while sustaining natural resources and offering successful land management.  Hitz Design is able to work with municipalities in bringing together a perfect harmony where land is both protected and preserved, while also used and enjoyed.

Some of the issues that have been addressed in past and current projects include erosion control, restoration of disturbed areas, landscape protection, run-off management, and protection of historic and/or sentimental plantings.

Additional consulting services available include view management, trimming rights, tree care, pruning specifics, and tree valuation.  Hitz Design is able to offer proven knowledge to assist municipal governments to create a plan that successfully manages the growth, sustainability, and overall health of their trees.

Hitz Design was originally consulted in 2007 as part of the redevelopment of Charlevoix’s East Park, located downtown on the waterfront in this popular Northern Michigan resort town.  The space was later selected by the American Planning Association (APA) as one of America’s Best Public Spaces, a prestigious award given to other popular public dwellings such as New York’s Central Park, Lincoln Park in Chicago, and the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

The project includes a functional trout stream featuring a series of rapids and pools that tumble into a larger pool and viewing area.  Also included is a beautiful, interactive fountain offering a fun-filled play area for children.  As lead consultant, Hitz coordinated the efforts of local engineers, government experts, and trout stream restoration experts.  The end result is a coveted public space that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Downtown Charlevoix has produced a video regarding this project.  See it HERE under Featured Improvement Project.
